Resources for Sex Offender Management

ILJ and SAIC worked together at the request of NIJ and the Corrections Program Office (CPO) of USDOJ on the development of a resource guide for the re-entry of sex offenders from institutions back into communities. This re-entry guide supports responsible practitioners in planning and implementing a comprehensive, coordinated, and inclusive strategy for successful offender re-integration and increased public safety. Of people convicted of sex offenses, 60 percent are supervised in the community, and almost all sex offenders are eventually released to the community. Not a lot is known about the lifetime trajectory of sex offender behavior, incident triggers, causes of desistance, and effective treatments. This guide draws together best ideas from current research and practice, using an integrated approach to sex offender management with outpatient and residential programs and post-release programming. The primary audience will be those in institutional and community corrections, law enforcement, social/victim services, community groups, and all who have a stake in the management of sex offenders in the community.
