MPD Technology

Metropolitan Police Department Study

The Institute for Law and Justice (ILJ) is working with Metropolitan Police, District of Columbia (MPDC) on a variety of projects related to the acquisition of new technology and criminal justice research. ILJ supported the acquisition of new technology at MPDC and is undertaking an effort with the department to identify ways of incorporating geographic information systems (GIS) into different areas including crime analysis and operations management.

Major technology improvements have included:

  • The records management/automated field reporting system (RMS/AFRS) and associated incident reporting, arrest reporting, and other core policing information components,
  • The Y2K-compliant Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system with implementation of both 911 emergency and 311 non-emergency systems,
  • Other infrastructure improvements associated with radio and mobile data computers.
