Drug Courts and Community Prosecution

• The idea of drug courts and the concept of community prosecution arrived at about the same timeApproximately 10 years ago

• While the two are not the same, there are some common reasons for their creation:

  • To move away from the idea of court success defined as number of successful prosecutions
  • An increased focus on individuals or communities to change the underlying problems
  • To keep certain cases or individuals with a few district attorneys and/or case managers to allow for increased follow-up and accountability
