Over a two-year period, ILJ staff documented and evaluated the education and vocational training programs funded by the National Institute of Corrections under the 1984 Supplemental Appropriation for Corrections Education. The funded programs included 20 small technical assistance grants, 10 computer initiatives, 25 short-term technical assistance projects, and 2 major training initiatives. A comprehensive report evaluating the impact of the 1984 funds was submitted to the National Institute of Corrections and was used as the basis for a national training conference for Adult and Juvenile State Directors of Correctional Education. Results of the evaluation of these programs will serve as a basis for policy, legislative initiatives, and targeting of funds for future programming in basic and vocational education for sentenced, incarcerated adult offenders.
